New Signing – Thefft

We are proud to announce another new signing to the Reprise publishing roster – Thefft

theft 7606 New Signing Thefft

Another frighteningly young producer with a sound as fresh as it is mature is a certain Jack Robertson, aka THEFFT.

Thefft’s industrial techno edge, supported by a classic, floor-friendly, groove-strong disco atmosphere, has quickly become his signature sound, a style that is going to see him in good stead. His productions contain the soul of New York in the body of Berlin with a London Mind.

Support has been widespread already, with some of dance’s most respected figures already firing his tracks in their sets. Thefft’s tracks have been heard in the mixes of Oneman, Loefah, Distal, Disclosure, Melé – and Zed Bias is such a fan, he invited him to the studio to write a track, which is forthcoming on his next Maddslinky album.

He’s already released on the respected net label Cut, and expect to see releases forthcoming on Distal & Mite’s Embassy Recordings as well as a 12″ on Damu’s new Label, Fulcrum Records, which is already garnering an impressive roster of new talent. These aren’t the only labels to be sniffing round the young Londoner… Thefft is gonna be committing some serious crimes in the near future.

An excellent guest mix for Mary Anne Hobbs on her prestigious XFM show is an excellent map to his sound.

Distal interviewed for Fact’s ‘New Talent’ feature.

distal feature 8.11main Distal interviewed for Facts New Talent feature.

Here’s an extract:

Distal can turn his hands to everything from the deepest dubstep to the most juked-out club tracks, and the results never seem diluted; rather, they feel like a consistent series of experiments from someone simply in love with music.

Speaking to him, he’s exactly as you’d expect from his music: inhumanly enthusiastic and eager to elaborate about anything he’s asked, and even stuff that he’s not. He’s already released a substantial amount of music in the last 12 months, but you’re about to hear a lot more: ‘Boss of the South’ and ‘Angry Acid’, released on Grizzly and Tectonic respectively (the latter features a certain R. Ellis on additional production and mixdown) represent his two best singles to date, and he’s currently putting the finishing touches to an album for Tectonic.

We spoke about footwork, synaesthesia and taking your shoes off in the club.

You seem every bit the modern dance producer – tons of releases scheduled for various labels, flitting between genres, your own label – is that a pretty fair description of you?

“Yes, very. I like to produce and DJ music at all tempos and moods. Being eclectic is becoming more and more of a rarity lately. Plus I’m a bit ADD in the studio, I can’t get stuck making the same thing for too long or I’ll go crazy.”

Download Distal – Grit In My Sss

distal 640 Download Distal Grit In My Sss

Sonic Router`s Oli Marlow writes:

The Atlantan producer Distal has long been in our virtual cross hairs. Back in November of last year we made him the subject of the Sonic Router column on the respected music portal theQuietus, and since then we’ve watched other people cotton on to what we latched onto ourselves.

In the aforementioned column I wrote:

“There’s ample variation in his output, whether he’s making juke, dubstep or techno it all sounds so utterly his, splattered with what seems to me like overtly American influences: the pace of ghetto dance music and the low down dirt and snare work of Southern hip hop. And honestly, it’s one of the most enamouring things about Distal’s work. It’s different and unpredictable, often coming at you unannounced with a wealth of tracks (and styles) to pick from.”

And his newest work, Android Tourism – a four track EP for Fortified Audio, mirrors what we said perfectly. ‘Africa to Mars’ is a manic roller, pinned to that description by the constant bubbling bass, and speedy drum work that’s driven by the mid range rattle of percussion, whereas the eponymous track, ‘Android Tourism,’ is a clattered work that’s fronted by a melody that sounds like it’s been twice reversed to give it that swell into impact. Keeping the pace of his tracks consistent it’s the way he colours in between the lines that is such a stark contrast, something he absolutely nails with ‘Novocaine Blonde,’ a 2562-esque assault on rhythm that’s peppered so perfectly with his typically Distal way of flipping sounds and percussion.

With the EP’s release earlier this week we’re chuffed to be able to shout its merits whilst simultaneously bringing you an exclusive production by Distal. ‘Grit in my Ssss’ is another fine example of his unique and fluid production techniques, blending some of that halfstep tension with catchy melodies in emphatic style.

New signing – Distal

image112 300x199 New signing Distal image112 New signing DistalWe’re very pleased to announce the signing of Distal to the Reprise Publishing roster.

Atlanta based producer, and part-owner of Embassy Recordings Distal has found himself rapidly building an internationally familiar brand in 2010. Combining time travel with dance music Distal breaks down the more ambiguous sounds from the past and fuses them with thoughts and equations of the future.

Because of this non-traditional approach to Dubstep, Funky and Techno, Distal has been forced to take a few risks, but along the way has created a very specific and friendly sound for himself. Bridging the gap between techno, breakbeat hardcore, house, funk, gangster rap, and even pop culture, is a tricky formula to entertain. This enthusiasm has already gained the attention of many well-respected shamans and pioneers working in Dubstep and Techno today. Most recently his first two releases under Embassy have graced the track listings of Appleblim, 2562, Joe Nice, Moldy, Ramadanman, BenUFO, Julio Bashmore, Breakage, and Moldy. The list of recognition is set to grow in  2010 with ‘Grape Donut’ being selected for the forthcoming Soul Jazz compilation, ‘Future Bass’.

“Attempt at Yellow” from Distal starts off with lust synths, and syncopate cymbals, with the only hint of what’s to come from the kick drum. The drop into the first section is earth shattering. The cymbals and vocal samples stay for the duration, and the synths come back in during the breakdown. Later on there’s some more sparse bits but it always comes back to that gigantic bassline. Declared a mandatory rewind by Joe Nice, this one will rock any dancefloor. “– Big Ups Magazine
